Windows Azure: costo storage, nuove istanze e prossimi IT Camp

Gennaio è stato un mese ricco di novità per Windows Azure infatti oltre al Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager Service in questi ultimi giorni sono stati fatti due annunci relativi allo Storage e nuove istanze per le VM.

Riduzione del prezzo dello Storage

Come annunciato sul blog di Windows Azure col post Announcing Reduced Pricing on Storage a partire dal 13 Marzo per competere coi prezzi degli Amazon Web Services (AWS) il prezzo dello storage verrà ridotto in tutti gli stati.

In particolare si avranno le seguenti riduzioni di prezzo, oltre a miglioramenti nelle performance e nella ridondanza geografica:

20% per Block Blobs Storage
28% per Locally Redundant Disks/Page Blobs Storage
50% per Storage transactions

Con questa politica di prezzi Azure diventa ancora più competitiva rispetto agli Amazon Web Services, di seguito un confronto riportato nel post Announcing Reduced Pricing on Storage:

“As an example, Azure IaaS Disks are $0.095/GB-month with Geo Redundancy. With AWS in order to get high durability of VM disks, customers have to pay the price of both EBS Standard Volumes ($0.05/GB-month) and EBS Snapshot to S3 ($0.095/GB-month), which is 34% more expensive.”

Nuove istanze A8 e A9

Il 30 gennaio sempre sul Windows HPC Team Blog col post New High Performance Capabilities for Windows Azure sono state annunciate due nuove istanze per VM dedicare a complesse attività di calcolo:

A8 con 8 core virtuali e 56 GB di RAM a 1,8246€/ora
A9 con 16 core virtuali e 112 GB di RAM e 3,6491€/ora

Queste istanze offrono anche una rete InfiniBand da 40 Gbit/s che include tecnologia di accesso diretto a memoria remota RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) per ottenere la massima efficienza su applicazioni MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallele. Le istanze A8 e A9 sono quindi indicate per l’esecuzione di applicazioni che implicano complesse attività di calcolo e di rete (ad esempio applicazioni cluster a prestazioni elevate, applicazioni che utilizzano modellazione, simulazione e analisi o codifica video).

A: Not at this time. A8 and A9 instances are initially available only in US North Central and Europe West.

Q: What is the difference between A7 and A8 compute instances?
A: Although both A7 and A8 instances have 8 virtual cores and 56 GB of RAM, A8 instances also offer the advantage of an additional 40Gbit/s InfiniBand network that includes remote direct memory access (RDMA) technology for maximum efficiency of parallel MPI applications.

Q: Do A8 and A9 compute instances have two networks?
A: Yes. In addition to an Ethernet connection, each instance is connected to an InfiniBand network.

Q: What can I use the additional InfiniBand network for?
A: The InfiniBand network can be used for high performance applications that require a low latency and high throughput communication between compute instances. A common example are parallel applications that use Message Passing Interface (MPI).

Q: Is the additional InfiniBand network connected to Windows Azure Storage, CDN, and other Windows Azure services or solutions?
A: No. The InfiniBand network in A8 and A9 instances is used only to connect compute instances within the same Cloud Services deployment, so that compute-intensive applications running on these instances can communicate with the highest efficiency.”
